Probenecid (Benuryl) should not be taken by those who are allergic to Probenecid (Benuryl), or by those with the following conditions: gout attack already in progress, uric acid kidney stones, or a blood cell disorder like anemia.  Before taking Probenecid (Benuryl), you should let your doctor know if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have the following conditions: history of stomach ulcer, history of kidney stones, or kidney disease.  If you do have any of those conditions, you may need to have your dose adjusted or to have special tests conducted before you can take the medication safely.  Probenecid (Benuryl) may harm an unborn baby, so women should tell their doctor if they are pregnant or if they become pregnant during treatment.  Women who are breastfeeding should not take this medication without letting their doctor know first because it may harm a nursing baby.  Probenecid (Benuryl) should not be given to children under the age of two.

You may experience some side effects while taking Probenecid (Benuryl).  The following side effects are serious and require emergency medical attention: severe pain in side/lower back, blood in urine, jaundice, dark coloured urine, confusion, swelling – especially if the swelling occurs in face/stomach/ankles/feet, and if your gout symptoms become worse.  You should stop use and contact your doctor at once if you experience any of the above severe side effects fromProbenecid (Benuryl).

Mild side effects of Probenecid (Benuryl) may include: headache/dizziness, sore gums, mild nausea/vomiting/loss of appetite, more frequent urination, loss of hair, warmth/redness/tingly feeling under skin, and mild itching/skin rash.  You should tell your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or become worse.  Your doctor should also be informed about any other unusual or bothersome changes you may experience while taking Probenecid (Benuryl).
